01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Under the elevated JR train tracks linking Yurakucho and Shimbashi, JS Renep delivers hearty food and fresh pours with the convivial energy of a German beer hall. The natural place to begin is with the German draft beers, poured straight from the keg. Selections include Bitburger, a crisp pilsner with an assertive hop bitterness; Köstritzer, the smooth black lager favored by Goethe; and fruity wheat beers such as Erdinger and Tucher, served in sizes from an accessible 300 ml glass up to larger steins.
House Eisbein and an Array of Sausages
Cold beer calls for substantial meat, and the restaurant's signature dish is Eisbein: bone-in pork knuckle cured in salt and gently simmered with aromatic vegetables. The kitchen also prepares it oven-roasted until crisp, or braised in beer, making it an ideal centerpiece for sharing around the table. Sausage platters offer just as much variety, ranging from Munich's classic Münchner Weißwurst—peeled and dipped in sweet mustard—to snap-skinned grilled links and thick-cut bacon.
Beer Braises and Hearty German Breads
Homestyle braises and authentic baked loaves round out the German experience. Beef braised in beer combines sweet sautéed onions with a rich German premium beer reduction, while a Kurobuta pork variation offers another rich alternative. Pair a salt-crusted pretzel or a slice of dense 100% whole-rye pumpernickel with house liver pâté to taste the comforting traditions of a German tavern table.
Potatoes are also prepared in several distinct ways, from basic skillet-fried versions to gratins, vinegar-tossed sautés, or varieties draped in specialty cheese sauce. JS Renep opens from midday on weekends and public holidays, making it a convenient stop after catching a show or shopping around Yurakucho and Hibiya. Evening seatings and group visits fill quickly, so reservations are recommended for an evening of lively toasts and classic German cooking.
